9th Division HARDCORE RECONDO patch & more
The 4/39 of the 9th Division was transformed by LTC David Hackworth into one of the finest combat units of the Vietnam War. Hackworth called his men Hard Core Recondo (no relation to the Special Forces Recondo school). I highly recommend Hackworth's book Steel My Soldiers Hearts about his experiences with the 4/39.
Hackworth was very pleased when veteran officer Col. John Hayes took over command of the 1st Brigade of the 9th Division in Vietnam. Lt. Col. Hackworth had a small number of these patches designed for his officer's and he gave one to General Hayes. The patch and other items here were part of a large group obtained by a noted collector/dealer from Hayes and The patch is accompanied by other uniform insignia from Colonel Hayes to include in-country made Col. eagle, jump wing, early white name tape, a 1st pattern twill 9th patch and copy 8x10 photos of Hayes in Vietnam.
