Uniform, insignia and medal group of
Major General Richard H. Carmichael.

Carmichael was born in Hillsboro, Tx and graduated West Point in 1936.  He recieved his pilot's wings in 1937 after service in the Field Artillery.  He is well known for leading the squadron of B-17's into Hickam Field, Pearl Harbor on the morning of Dec. 7th 1941 during the Japanese attack on the island of Oahu.  For his expert flying and bringing in his squadron safely during this attack he was personally awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by MacArthur.  He earned his DSC as commander of the 19th Bomb Group in a combat mission against the Japanese in which his plane was severly damaged and crewman killed.  During a daylight raid on Yawata, Japan on August 20th 1944 his B-29 was shot down and he remained a POW for the remainder of the war.  He flew another 39 combat missions during the Korean War as commander of the 98th Bomb Group before returning to command in the United States.

General Carmichael's group is extensive and I'm sure I'll leave out something in the description, however here goes!
His medals include DSC with wrap broach numbered 14296, BB&B split wrap broach Silver Star numbered 19210 with OLC, wrap broach LoM with 4 OLC's, DFC with OLC, wrap broach Air Medal with 3 OLC's, and his campaign and service awards for pre-WWII through the Korean War.
None of the numbered awards are directly traceable however a photo of the awards ceremony shows identical patterns being pinned on and the 1998 sales reciept for the group further documents the numbers on the awards.
His Mess Dress blue & white uniforms are included with the bullion Major General boards.
WWII bullion insignia is accompanied by a post war bullion 5th AF patch and a superb CBI made incised leather Hellbirds 462nd Bomb Group patch.
Wings in the group include his Orber pinback Pilot wing, an unmarked clutchback Sr. Pilot wing, and a Robbins marked Command Pilot wing.
The Hellbirds Unit story is well told in the book "Hellbirds:  The Story of the B29 in Combat" by Morrison, a copy is included with this group!
Original photos and newspaper clippings add greatly to the group as does a wealth of research that is included!
