W. Virginia Civil War Service Medal
FOR LIBERTY Infantry & Cavalry Service
W.VA struck medals to honor her citizens who served in the American Civil War.  It came in three classes: Honorably Discharged for war service, For Liberty given to the next of kin of men who died of wounds, accident, or disease during service, and Killed in Battle for KIA’s. This excellent condition award is correctly rim impressed to Putnam County solder
VINCENT E. GILLESPIE  CO. D. 8th INF. VOLS.
      Began his service as a Private in the 8th WVA Infantry an transferred to the 7th WVA Cavalry. He died on Aug. 9, 1863 of typhoid Petersburg, VA. A said note to add, the his mother applied for his pension as next of kin, she also applied for a pension from her husband, Vincents father, who was also killed in action.
