Confederate Kennansville Armory Cavalry Sword
This exceptional sword was made at Louis Froelich’s Confederate States Armory in Kenansville, NC. His swords have a distinctive smooth rounded pommel and other characteristics of Southern wartime manufacture.
An unmarked sword that features an unstopped fuller and rounded spine, the cast brass guard is another Froelich characteristic. The thin black leather-wrapped wood grip has the single strand of iron wire intact, and the iron scabbard exhibits a visible seam. The sword has a brass throat and bands as well as iron rings. A clear Roman numeral "V" is on the scabbard throat.
This example is in worn but overall, very good condition and a local estate sale find many years ago. The blade is stained dark with light pitting and minor nicks. No chips or sharpening. The guard and grip are tight and well preserved. The grip leather and typical Confederate single strand copper wire braid is excellent. The scabbard is strong and undamaged with a layer of light surface rust throughout. The drag is not as normally seen on a Kenansville sword. It is a period original drag but no way to know when it was replaced.
