Penny Toys
‘There
is more to a name…’ as the expression begins!
“Penny toys” were certainly more highly prized at the time than the
penny spent and are certainly worth more than a penny today! These small, creative and colorful tin toys
were popular from around 1890 to the pre-WWII era and were the child’s
inexpensive toy. Primarily from Germany,
France, and Japan; most had moving parts and were well detailed. Though tin litho toys are the most sought after, toys were also found in lead, iron, paper, wood,
and celluloid. These toys
included vehicles, clowns, animals, baby carriages and much more! No longer sold for a penny by street vendors, we grown children are on the lookout! I highly recommend David Pressland’s “Book of Penny Toys”.
