Rare Span Am War Silver Citation Star
document to noted officer
Brigadier General William Mason Fassett, from Nashua, NH graduated from
the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1892. He had a
distinguished career that included gallantry in the Spanish American War,
commanding the 37th Division in WWI and post war service. His awards
include the Silver Star for Gallantry at Santiago and the Distinguished Service
Medal in WWI with the 37th for "the forcing of the crossing of the Escaut River,
Belgium, in November 1918, and the establishment of a bridgehead thereat,"
I have to offer a rather rare original document awarding the Silver
Citation Star to Fassett based on his Citation for Gallantry in Santiago!
The document preceded the later creation of the medal we now know as the Silver
Star and would have been exemplified in uniform wear by a Silver Star mounted on
the ribbon bar and drape of his Spanish Campaign Medal.
The document is undamaged with light age only, it has been board mounted
and period framed. The photo's are of the document out of the frame.
Awarded to "William Mason Fassett, United
States Army, was cited for gallantry in action during the Santiago de Cuba
Campaign, 22 June to 17 July 1898."
