USN Officer's Campaign medal group
Lt. JG Carl Axelson, USN (b. 10/18/1877 – d. 12/18/1953) from New York (Buried at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA)
Served as a seaman aboard the USS St. Paul, USS South Carolina, and USS Illinois in the Spanish American War, Mexican Campaign and into WWI before retiring.  His group includes numbered rim campaigns, an Italian Red Cross 1908 earthquake relief medal, and his officially engraved USS St. Paul Sampson medal.  I love the early dogtag in the group!

At 5:22 AM on the 28th December 1908 the Sicily & Calabria area of Italy was struck by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake.  It was a major disaster with a terrible death toll, estimates range from (70,000 - 100,000 dead.  Many nations came to the aid of the affected areas and various ships in the Mediterranean at the time were deployed to offer whatever help could be given.  A number of Royal Navy and US Navy vessels landed men to assist, from digging survivors out from collapsed buildings to assisting with the evacuation of the injured and homeless.
The medals reads TERREMOTO(earthquake)CALABRO-SICULO MCMVIII (Romans letter date for 1908).
